April  GUEST SPEAKER

I would like to thank former Guest Speaker Organiser, Gaby Menschel, for arranging speakers in advance for today’s April meeting, and for May & June.   It’s been a big help to me when taking over the job to have some breathing space to organise myself.

The April speaker was Daniella Luchi, the Program and Events Manager of the Enough is Enough Anti-Violence Movement.  Daniella has worked for that organization for 2 years and enlightened us about the activities and achievements of that Organization.  Her presentation was informative and professional, although hampered somewhat through no fault of her own by technical difficulties with cables, which precluded the use of visual material.

The May speaker will be David Rosenberg.…David is the author of several books on Pine Gap, a joint US/Australian Satellite Tracking Station established in 1966 in the desert near Alice Springs.  He was also a consultant for the TV series of the same name, and having worked there as a high-tech intelligence agent for 18 years, will give an insider’s view of this often controversial establishment.

Our June speaker will be Jim Haynes, well known Aust. historian, teacher, entertainer, song writer, poet, and bush band member.  He has entertained us before in January with a humorous history of ‘The Ghan’ train.  He has promised to make us laugh.

May

Our May speaker was David Rosenberg… author of several books on Pine Gap, a joint US/Australian Satellite Tracking Station in the desert near Alice Springs.  He was also a consultant for the TV series of the same name, and having worked there as a high-tech intelligence agent for 18 years, gave a very interesting and entertaining insider’s view of the function and capabilities of this often-controversial establishment.

Our June speaker will be Jim Haynes, well known Aust. historian, teacher, entertainer, song writer, poet, and bush band member.  He has entertained us before in January and has promised to make us laugh.

In July we will have a speaker (name as yet unknown) from the Australian Cyber Security Centre, Department of Defense,  Canberra, to speak about  cyber security, and the alarming rise in reports  of  identity theft,  privacy theft and victims of scams.  The elderly are often targeted  and the speaker will address general cyber security, how to protect privacy on Facebook and other social mediums,  scams and how to recognise  and avoid them.

In August, author Warren Henry will speak about his book, ’An Ark in your Pocket’, which relates to family relations in the modern world…  How do we maintain bonds of intimacy and togetherness when we often live ever further apart?  How do you pass on what’s been important in your lifetime to your children and their children?…. and help them learn who they are and where they came from.”  He says, apart from that topic, “he may also drift into other matters” and he has had plenty of experiences to drift into.

GUEST SPEAKER

Our speaker this month was Jim Haynes, well known Aust. historian, teacher, entertainer, song writer, and poet, who treated us to a humorous and interesting journey through a variety of early Australian history topics.   Despite some  technical  difficulties  which we are still experiencing with the electronics at the club,  he  entertained us as promised.

In September…Chris Mahoney  (Trainer, Counsellor & Wellness Coach) will speak on  ‘Wellness and Simple tools  for living a healthy lifestyle’

(This could be a very timely topic, coming four days after our Caravanning and holiday groups return after a week of drinking, eating and whatever else they get up to whilst away).

GUEST SPEAKER

Our scheduled speaker for this month, (October) was to be from the ‘Make-a-Wish foundation‘ ... For personal reasons, the speaker had to withdraw suddenly, and a presentation is now re-scheduled to February 2022.

I am grateful that I was able to secure Chris Mahoney, and his business co-founder Marnie Dauroff, as replacements. They have a website, www.cmwellnessco.com.au and run studio courses and workshops with the mission to make Wellness a standard for everyone through simple daily habits for living a healthy lifestyle.

As part of their presentation, the meeting was led through ‘chair yoga‘ which consisted of a series of simple breathing, stress and muscle relaxing exercises, while remaining seated in your chair. The audience participation was excellent and feedback was positive.

Chris had previously been re-scheduled to next year due to Covid, so my thanks to both he and Marnie for attending at short notice.

GUEST SPEAKER

The scheduled speaker for November was to be from the Australian Cyber Security Centre, however was a late withdrawal due to Covid matters, and has now been re-scheduled for June, 2022.

I am grateful to Clive Baker, who agreed at short notice to speak at today’s meeting.  Clive is a local resident and founder of the Shire Military History Club, and Military Museum.  His easy-going and knowledgeable style, sprinkled with his dry sense of humour, ensured a very interesting and informative presentation of the historical involvement and contact of the military in the Shire, from as early as 1886, through both World Wars and even today.   The presentation had to be limited due to time restraints, but there is more to tell and I am sure Clive will be welcomed back by members sometime in 2022.

Author Warren Henry, the scheduled speaker for our December meeting, contacted me on the weekend and withdrew, citing a spike of Covid (Omicron) infections in the Central Coast area where he resides, plus a total train strike commencing Monday evening through to Tuesday morning which would increase metro and M1 highway traffic. He has been re-scheduled to our next vacancy in May, 2022.
